WELCOME TO THE WOODYARD
"A place where people come together and don't feel lonely"
Just imagine. A place where everyone in the community is welcome. A place where even the most vulnerable and disadvantaged feel at home. A place of connection and creativity. This place is called ‘The Woodyard’.

About The Woodyard
The original fictional ‘Woodyard’ is the work of well-known author, Ann Cleeves, creator of ‘Vera’ and ‘Shetland’, who has strong ties to North Devon. In her book ‘The Long Call’, set in this part of the world, Ann describes a bustling community hub called The Woodyard as a place where people meet, engage in creative activities and connect with others.
’The Woodyard was Jonathan’s pride and joy …he’d made the imaginative leap…..[combining] his passion for bringing together different groups of people in one place … artists and people with a learning disability…a community hub…an arts centre, a café, a place for people to meet and explore ideas and people right at the heart of things rather than being hidden away.‘ The Long Call’ (2019), a novel by Ann Cleeves set in North Devon.
A consortium of local small charity leaders and community organisations are now working together to make the fictional Woodyard a reality – to create a welcoming space for all, and particularly the disadvantaged.
Our original aim was to find, or create, a real-life physical building to house The Woodyard. However, after in-depth consultation with local stakeholders and community groups, in this initial phase we have moved away from a ‘bricks and mortar’ Woodyard to focus on project delivery and outreach. Through programmes such as Mindful Monday and Reading for Wellbeing, we are committed to bringing to life the same goals and vision of the fictional Woodyard, as described by Ann. We would love you to join us on our journey!
Why North Devon?
At The Woodyard, we believe in the power of community-led projects to transform lives. We act as a facilitator and connector, supporting a range of wellbeing-focused programmes designed to bring people together and foster personal and social growth.
For many years, local charity leaders and community groups with an in-depth practical understanding of the social challenges specific to North Devon, have recognised the need to collaborate more closely. Sharing ideas and knowledge is the only way to better serve those needing support. Which is when the idea of bringing the fictional Woodyard to life was born.
Ann Cleeves has a long-standing connection with North Devon. Find out why the project has her whole-hearted support and the positive impact a real-life Woodyard could make to so many local lives.
In collaboration with our partners, we are proud to introduce two new initiatives designed to directly address the issue of loneliness in our community. Since Summer 2025, Mindful Monday community drop-in sessions take place on the second and fourth Monday of every month in Barnstaple. And ‘Reading for Wellbeing’ is also up and running.
